SUN SCREEN — UNY Yogyakarta students have created a sunscreen body lotion made from chitosan and aloe vera extracts that function as an alternative to natural sunscreen to protect the skin from UV rays while moisturizing the skin.
Rhizma Az Zahra, a Chemical Engineering student, said that sunscreen cosmetic products that are often found generally contain synthetic chemicals as active ingredients such as oxybenzone and avobenzone. The cream protects the skin by reflecting sunlight. However, this synthetic sunscreen can pose a risk of skin cancer, toxicity and irritation.
“Therefore, efforts are needed to maximize the use of natural ingredients as active ingredients in sunscreen body lotion that are safe to use. The natural ingredients taken are chitosan and aloe vera,” said Rhizma, Thursday (5/9/2024).
Meanwhile, chitosan is a polymer derived from shrimp shells which is known to form a good occlusive layer that can form an edible film layer, so that it can physically ward off UV rays. And Aloe vera can act as a natural antioxidant that works by breaking the chain reaction of fat and making it more stable, binding metal ions, capturing oxygen, breaking down hydroperoxides into non-radical compounds and absorbing UV radiation. He explained, the preparation of the lotion begins with the creation of the oil phase and the water phase.
The oil phase consists of carrageenan and stearic acid. The water phase consists of triethanolamine, glycerin, nipagin, and distilled water (⅓ part). These ingredients are mixed according to their respective phases and then heated in a water bath at a temperature of 70-75oC. After being heated, the oil phase is stirred until homogeneous. Next, add the water phase into the oil phase little by little while stirring quickly until homogeneous.
After both phases are mixed homogeneously, add chitosan and Aloe vera extract while adding the remaining distilled water (⅔ part) while continuing to stir until all ingredients are mixed homogeneously. The lotion that has been made is put into a 100 ml tube. Then a seal is attached to the mouth of the tube and the label is attached.
KiLoev products are promoted directly to consumers by distributing brochures and pamphlets. Then indirectly promoted through social media, routinely and actively participating in various events such as exhibitions and cosmetic bazaars to introduce KiLoev products and using online marketplaces.
