GRAPE GARDEN — The Tompeyan Village community, Tegalrejo Village, Yogyakarta City, has developed grape cultivation and seedlings in residents’ yards. This activity has been carried out since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic until now. Since the beginning of the nursery, the community has utilized the existing yard to plant grapes and sow them into grape seedlings.
Initially it was only a hobby, but over time, this grape cultivation has grown and become an additional source of income for residents.
The Head of the Yogyakarta City Potted Fruit Plant Group, Eka Yulianta, said that at the beginning of the nursery there were around 120 types of grapes planted by residents. Therefore, currently Tompeyan Village is known as the Grape Village because most residents leave land for grape gardens.
“Since some time ago, we have often received guests who are interested in grape picking tours. Guests come here to see the plants that have borne fruit. ” said Eka, Friday (8/30/2024).
Then, Eka added, currently there are around 50 types of grapes cultivated by Tompeyan residents such as: tamaki, ninel, nizina, bogema, trans, dixon and julian grapes. Grape plant cultivation is carried out through a system of fertilized grape stem cuttings.
Grape cultivation provides economic benefits for local residents. They can sell their harvest either directly or through community groups. In addition, the existence of vineyards helps maintain environmental sustainability. Grape plants can absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.
“From seeing and picking the fruit, then what will be taken home. We also make several derivative products from the grapes themselves. If we eat here we make grape leaf buntil. There are grape leaf chips, grape sauce, jam and syrup products,” he said. (*/)
